L'Atelier
L'Atelier saw its debut into the world of cigars in 2012 and has been setting the standard for being “Consumer Price Conscious” at such an elite level ever since.
French for “the workshop”, anyone who was privy enough to partake in any cigar of this fairly new line can tell that quite a bit of time was spent in the workshop perfecting each and every cigar released.
Founder Pete Johnson is best known for his ever-popular Tatuaje brand. Johnson alongside the Garcia Family and a slew of industry friends like Dan Welsh, K.C. Johnson and Sean “Casper” Johnson set out to achieve the goal of creating premium handcrafted cigars without the luxury price tag and thus in turn elevating the expectations of cigar smokers at every level of experience.
Introduced in three sizes, the flagship L’Atelier brand are virtually identical to the trio of sizes in Cuba's Cohiba Behike line, right down to the pigtail capped finish. This offering is based on a new wrapper that was grown in Ecuador by the Oliva tobacco family. The wrapper, Sancti Spiritus, is a hybrid of Criollo and Pelo de Oro, the “lost seed of Cuba”, and L’Atelier is the first cigar to market this wrapper using it as the focal point. The blend is a puro, all Nicaraguan, specially designed to accent this rare and unique wrapper. Its strength falls in the medium to medium-full in body and the blend is flavor-forward, just like the wrapper.
L'Atelier Cigars are all made under the watchful eye of the esteemed Garcia family, blended by Pete Johnson and is made at the My Father Cigars factory in Esteli, Nicaragua. This flagship line, L’Atelier is known for its use of the rare and special Sancti Spíritus tobacco in their blends, using the highest priming giving them that signature and unparalleled flavor profile. This is especially noteworthy as only the most skilled and seasoned artisans are equipped to handle as harvesters must use traditional methods to keep the crops in good health requiring significant time and dedication.
In the years since, Pete Johnson has expanded the L’Atelier portfolio with additional version as well as lines such as La Mission and Côte d'Or, L'Atelier Selection Spéciale and L'Atelier La Mission. Each blend includes in its composition at least one leaf of Sancti Spiritus tobacco, a hybrid of the Criollo and Pelo de Oro seed varietals.
At a price point of $8-$10, each offering is dressed to impressed and is remarkably rich from its blend to its boxing and its bands. The majority of the lines boast high accolades scoring 90+ ratings and ranking overall in the top 5 by critically acclaimed cigar publications.
