HVC Serie A
A company’s whose name is an acronym for Havana City has been steamrolling its way through the cigar industry with premium sticks steeped in Cuban tradition.
Founded in 2011 by Reinier Lorenzo— for the better part of a decade HVC Cigars has remained one of the best kept secrets despite its sterling portfolio when it comes to premium smokes in the cigar space. Since its establishment, Lorenzo has attributed each cigar as a homage to his birthplace of Havana City (HVC), in addition to the region’s renown traditions in hand rolled cigars and impeccable craftsmanship. Through his strategic partnership with the Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A. (TABSA) factory in Estelí (where traditional and Cuban-inspired practices remain steadfast), Lorenzo is able to execute, and well, his vision.
Since the Fernández family owns both the factory and farms, the company has been able to spotlight the elite AGANORSA tobaccos through the company portfolio with its blends almost exclusively. The latest addition, HVC Serie A speaks to this notion.
Looking at all the premium cigars on the market today, the majority have something in common, a grade A wrapper. The blend sets itself ahead of the competition for whereas other cigars may boast a grade A wrapper, the binder and fillers used are of a lesser grade. Serie A earns its name and is solely comprised of grade-A tobacco. Virtually seamless to the naked eye, the cigars are just as impressive in profile as they are visually. Spotlighted is a Nicaraguan Corojo ’99 as the wrapper encompassing Nicaraguan binders and fillers.
The cigar’s flavor profile is complex culminating in a medium bodied smoke. Persistent are notes of nuts, caramel, and a floral sweetness ever evolving after igniting with spicy red pepper, cinnamon and cabinet spices creating palate bliss.
Upon the heels of the exclusive Hawaiian launch of the HVC Serie A (rolled in a robusto format) in early spring of 2019, the company followed up with two more sizes available on a national scale at the 2019 IPCPR trade show. Both Vitolas – a HVC Serie A Perlas 5.62×46 and HVC Serie A Canones 5.50×54 are packaged in traditional wooden boxes of 10 cigars, starting with prices ranging from $8.50 to $9.60 per cigar. The blend placed number 3 and was crowned 2019 Cigar of the Year by the acclaimed publication Cigar Dojo.
